    From Transportation to Transformation: On the Use of the Metaphor of Translation within Media and Communication Theory

    This paper explores some of the common ground between media/communication and translation theory by focusing on the double metaphor of transportation/transformation. The first part of the paper deals with the more general theoretical implications of a possible interchange between communication and translation in view of the notion of spatiality and the paradigmatic change that has occurred in translation theory in the last few years moving from a transportation to a transformation oriented approach to the process of translation. The second part focuses on the work of a series of theorists who have made extensive use of the metaphor of translation to describe inter-mediatic and communicative processes: Marshall McLuhan, Vilém Flusser, Lev Manovich, and Michel Serres. This section shows that despite the use of a transformative definition of the functioning of translation the single authors have neglected to address the question of the actual nature of this transformative process. Finally, therefore, the paper discusses the relevance of the use of the metaphor of translation within communication and media theory in view of a closer definition of its transformative power

    In this paper I would like to explore the work of five bilingual writers focusing on the different narratives they develop in their use of (self-)translation as a textual strategy to fashion a sexual persona. Julia(e)n Green’s Le langage et son double/The Language and its Shadow and Louis Wolfson’s Le Schizo et les langues create narratives of severance and disjointing. The self-translational activity is used here to create perfectly separated spheres of (sexual) identity. Raymond Federman’s A Voice within a Voice and Christine Brooke-Rose’s Between, on the other hand, develop narratives of merging and mixing. The self-translating activity is viewed as a constant shifting and moving of sexual roles taking place in a sphere outside the conscious control of the writer. The final part of the paper will be dedicated to a discussion of Abdelkebir Khatibi’s Amour bilingue that fictionalizes the functioning of bilingualism and self-translation in terms of sexual roles, introducing, this way, a post-colonial dimension missing in the other texts.Dans ce texte j’aimerais explorer l’oeuvre de cinq Ă©crivains bilingues, en me concentrant sur les diffĂ©rents rĂ©cits qu’ils produisent en utilisant l’(auto)-traduction comme stratĂ©gie textuelle pour crĂ©er une identitĂ© sexuelle. Julia(e)n Green (Le langage et son double/The Language and its Shadow) et Louis Wolfson (Le Schizo et les langues) Ă©laborent des rĂ©cits de sĂ©paration et de disjonction. L’auto-traduction est utilisĂ©e ici pour gĂ©nĂ©rer des sphĂšres sexuelles tout Ă  fait sĂ©parĂ©es. Raymond Federman (A Voice within a Voice) et Christine Brooke-Rose (Between) par contre dĂ©veloppent des rĂ©cits de fusion et de mĂ©lange. On considĂšre que l’auto-traduction, lorsqu’elle entraĂźne des changements et des revirements au sein des rĂŽles sexuels, Ă©volue dans un espace qui relĂšve de l’inconscient de l’auteur. La partie finale de la prĂ©sentation est consacrĂ©e Ă  la discussion de Abdelkebir Khatibi (Amour bilingue) qui parle du bilinguisme et de l’auto-traduction en termes de rĂŽles sexuels, ajoutant, ainsi, une dimension post-coloniale qui est absente dans les autres textes

    The article explores the interconnectedness of VilĂ©m Flusser’s and Jacques Derrida’s work with respect to the concept of writing, dealing with two specific moments in time linked by common sources, analogous methods and shared aims: the cultural context of the mid-sixties that witnessed the attempt of concrete poetry to break away from linearity by using the page as a two-dimensional space for inscription, and the late eighties and early nineties characterized by the onset of a progressive migration of writing from the book to the screen, opening up a whole set of new possibilities for the writing practice itself.O artigo explora a conexĂŁo entre os trabalhos de VilĂ©m Flusser e Jacques Derrida com respeito ao conceito de escrita, abordando dois momentos especĂ­ficos no tempo ligados por fontes comuns, mĂ©todos anĂĄlogos e que compartilham o mesmo objetivo: o contexto cultural da metade dos anos sessenta (mid-sixties) que testemunharam a tentativa de quebra da linearidade da poesia concreta usando a pĂĄgina como um espaço bidimensional para inscrição e o fim dos anos oitenta / começo dos noventa caracterizados pelo inĂ­cio da passagem progressiva da escrita do livro para a tela, abrindo assim uma sĂ©rie de novas possibilidades para a prĂĄtica da prĂłpria escrita

    In recent years, the theme of bodily fragmentation has received much attention in academic studies in Europe. The body and its parts have come to be viewed as text, trope, or metaphor, allowing one to think of the social systems. Based on contemporary reflections dealing with the body as text or discourse, including Mikhail Bakhtin, Stefanie Wenner, and Jacques Lacan, the current article revisits Empedocles and Plutarch to discuss particularly the anthropological and philosophical aspects of the concepts that have been constructed concerning the body.<br>Nos Ășltimos anos o tema da fragmentação do corpo tem recebido muita atenção dos estudos acadĂȘmicos na Europa. Passa-se a ver o corpo e suas partes como texto, tropo ou metĂĄfora que permitem pensar os sistemas sociais.
